Why the kitchen step stool is shaped the way it is
The platform is the part that matters over three years. At 20 inches an eighteen-month-old reaches a standard 36-inch counter; at 12 inches a four-year-old is still inside the rail rather than above it. Moving the platform down is four screws and a quarter of an hour, and it is the only part of the tower that ever changes.

Using a kitchen step stool safely
A tower is a solid wood frame rated to 150 pounds with a rail on four sides, made for children between eighteen months and five years. The rail is what makes it a tower rather than a step: it keeps a child in one place instead of balancing on an edge. It does nothing about the counter itself, and the counter is where the kettle, the knives and the hob are. Turning pan handles to the back and moving the kettle cable is worth more than any feature on this page.
The piece carries a Children’s Product Certificate. That certificate is written by the maker or the importer on the strength of testing by a laboratory the Consumer Product Safety Commission has accepted, and it says the piece meets the children’s product rules that apply to it. A Commission approval is a different thing, and this is not one. Assemble it with the hardware that comes in the box and check the four screws under the platform after the first month - a frame a child leans on is a frame that works loose slowly.

Which platform height should you start an EGREE stool at?
The top one, at 20 inches. A standard kitchen counter is 36 inches, and 20 inches of platform brings a child of about eighteen months to the edge of it with the rail still above their waist.
Drop to 16 inches at around three and to 12 inches at four. The platform is the only part of the stool that ever moves, and moving it is four screws.
How long does an EGREE step stool take to put together?
A quarter of an hour, sometimes twenty minutes, for one or two people. It arrives flat with the hardware in its own package, and the fittings are countersunk screws into pre-drilled holes rather than dowels and glue.
Is a wooden stool worth the weight over a plastic one?
This one is solid wood and weighs between twelve and nineteen pounds depending on the finish, against three or four for a plastic step. That weight is the reason it does not walk across a kitchen floor when a child leans on the rail.
It is also the reason it is not the thing to carry from room to room. If you want one object that moves, this is not it.
