Why the potty training seat is shaped the way it is
It sits on the rim rather than on the floor, which is the whole argument for this shape: nothing to empty, nothing to carry to the sink, and the child learns the toilet they will keep using. It fits round, U-shaped and elongated rims. It does not fit a square one, and that is worth checking before ordering rather than after.

Using a potty training seat safely
A seat with a ladder removes the height from toilet training and nothing else. The American Academy of Pediatrics puts the usual start of training between two and three years of age, with most children in the United States trained by four, and the readiness signs it lists are all about the child: staying dry for two hours, following a simple instruction, walking to the bathroom and helping to undress. A child who is not ready is not made ready by equipment.
The two practical checks are the rim and the floor. The seat fits round, U-shaped and elongated rims and does not fit a square one, and the ladder needs a flat, dry patch of floor in front of the bowl. The footboard is non-slip and there are rubber pads under the seat, and both of those work best on a floor that is not wet - which in a family bathroom is worth a look before every use rather than once at assembly.
